Home Is Where The Heart Is – The Legend Villas

Nov. 4, 2016

Vigan. A UNESCO World Heritage Site at the western coast of Luzon, northern part of the Philippines. Capital of the province of Ilocos Sur. Home of the Singsons. (Sosyal diba?! Yaman!!)

Not! Everybody knows Vigan is Chavit Singson country but I’m not really talking about those Singsons. I’m thinking more of the other branch of the family. The ordinary folks. Those with no private planes, no private zoos in the backyard and (thankfully!) no extra wives.

Most of my readers probably just know me as Mommy Kay but my whole name is Katrina Taguiam Singson. I’m from Cabanatuan City. I am married to a pure-blooded Ilocano who I’ve never heard speak a single Ilocano word, not even “ay ayaten ka”.

My husband, Rupert Singson, was born in Metro Manila and grew up as a true-blue Manileño. His family, the Singsons, hails from Vigan. And though most members of the family are already as Tagalog as I am, I guess it is no surprise that a Singson will always find a home in Vigan.

Vigan. UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home of the Singsons.

Vigan. UNESCO World Heritage Site. Home of the Singsons.

The first time I set foot in Vigan was when I went on a college field trip for my Humanities class more than ten years ago. I did not know then that I would eventually become a Singson myself, but for some reason, I felt at home. I felt as if I found a piece of myself that I did not know was missing.

There was something about Vigan that charmed me to a great extent. Perhaps, it was the cobblestones that transported me to a completely different era or the rows and rows of ancestral houses or the clicking and clacking of the horse-drawn kalesa or the delicious smell of the empanada. Perhaps, it was the combination of all of those things.

As fate would have it, I would meet Vigan again a few years later. My cousin would get married there and I would be one of the bridesmaids. I thought about my first time in Vigan and how it affected me. Time and distance has a way of making one doubt one’s own feelings. Maybe, Vigan wasn’t really all that. Maybe, it was just my inexperience in traveling that made me too easy to please, too easy to impress.

Well, it was my second time. I knew exactly what to see and expect. I knew what to eat and where to go. The novelty of it all should have waned already, but I was again swept over by Vigan’s innate charm. I realized then that Vigan and I aren’t just a fling. Inevitably and inexplicably, Vigan is my home.

Could it have been a sign or just plain coincidence? Because, the next time I found myself in Vigan, I was already a wife and a mother with a new last name – Singson. Rupert and I walked the cobbled streets of Vigan hand in hand. Zuri, who was just one year old then, enjoyed the kalesa ride and her visit to the Buridek Children’s Museum. With Rupert and Zuri by my side, I was complete. I was home.

calle-crisologo-vigan-city-ilocos-sur

My husband Rupert and me on the cobbled Calle Crisologo in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur

It’s a bit anticlimactic that after all that, Vigan and I would not be seeing each other again for a long time.  Well, life is funny that way. A moment of self-discovery in a far-flung province was soon masked by the rigors of everyday life. I immersed myself in my new role as a mother and a wife. Rupert immersed himself in his career, braving the four-hour daily travel through Metro Manila’s horrendous traffic.

We found ourselves exploring other provinces and even other countries but seemed to have forgotten about Vigan – much like how a son who eagerly goes out on a date with a new girlfriend forgets to call his parents.

It came as a huge surprise to me that after a span of four years, I would see Vigan again. Last weekend, during the long holiday break, I found my home again. I felt an unexpected sense of tranquility.

the-legend-villas-mandaluyong

the-legend-villas-mandaluyong-4

Oh, how I missed the old world charm! The cobbled steps, the old wooden furniture, that unique Filipino allure – all of these things that I associate with the warmth of home. I was so glad I found them again. As I looked around, I swear I could almost hear the clicking and clacking of the horses.

It was as if I transcended time. Like I was brought back to the past, to an entirely different era that I’ve always associated with Vigan.  It was as if I transcended space, too. Because, in the exact same space where the busy city of Mandaluyong is, that’s where I found Vigan again.

Yes, it was right here in Metro Manila, in the city of Mandaluyong, at a hotel called The Legend Villas that I found my home.

I was at The Legend Villas to attend the first ever TravelBook Philippines Blogger Affiliate Get Together. I knew the event was going to be held at The Legend Villas so, of course, like what any self-respecting millennial would do, I googled it. That’s why even before I arrived, I already had an idea about the hotel.

Google, however, did nothing to prepare me for how I felt when I stepped out of my car to see The Legend Villas for the first time. I was surprised! It has a certain charm and warmth that just couldn’t be captured in photos. It engulfed me and caressed me at the same time. Like a magic potion.

Charmed as I was, I did not linger. I did not want to be late so I went straight to the TravelBook Blogger Affiliate Get Together at the hotel’s Del Pilar Room. Luckily, as part of the event, all of us bloggers would soon be given a tour of The Legend Villas. What a treat! The tour gave me more time to inhale all of the hotel’s “Vigan-ish” charm.

During the tour, I saw some of the hotel’s guest rooms, function rooms and swimming pool. Let me share them with you!

The Legend Villas Guest Rooms

The Villa Suite

The Villa Suite has this gorgeous facade that totally sets the mood for some serious relaxation. Bricks + colored glass windows  + wooden accents + black metallic old-style lamp + some greens! Talk about classic Filipino style!

I love that the Villa Suite bathroom has both a rain shower and a telephone shower! The telephone shower is very handy when giving kids a bath while the rain shower is very relaxing for tired mommies and daddies. The toilet also comes with a bidet shower. Again, very handy!

The Team Suite

From my favorite Villa Suite, we moved on to the Team Suite. The Legend Villas Team Suite is a 52 sqm bi-level suite good for 6 persons. It has six single beds with individual closets, living and dining areas, 2 cable TVs, 2 toilets and bath. The suite is fully air-conditioned.

For her 5th birthday, Zuri threw an intimate swimming party in a hotel in Ortigas. If ever Zuri decides to throw another intimate swimming party on her next birthday, I can totally see us occupying this Team Suite with her little cousins. We will all fit here!

See the colored glass windows? The Team Suite is simpler in terms of design compared to the Villa Suite but it still has a few details in keeping with The Legend Villas old world charm.

Lanai and Datu

After the tour, all of us bloggers were lead to the Lanai and Datu area where a lunch buffet spread prepared by Lola Maria Restaurant was set-up. This was another highlight for me! After all, what’s a Filipino homecoming without food, right? 🙂 I was so excited to eat Lola Maria’s famous dishes, but first, I took photos! Lanai and Datu looked just as good as the appetizing food from Lola Maria.

Lanai is a 135 sqm open air wooden deck area right by the hotel pool that can accommodate up to 76 pax banquet-style. Right next to Lanai is Datu, an enclosed, air-conditioned, 49 sqm function room that can accommodate up to 30 pax banquet-style. Datu can open up to Lanai and together, they make up 184 sqm of usable space that can accommodate up to 120 pax banquet-style.

Oh, before I make you salivate with the photos that I took of the lunch buffet spread prepared by Lola Maria, let me first show you the hotel pool.

An absolute requirement for my family when choosing a hotel is the hotel swimming pool. My 5-year-old daughter, Zuri, loves the water so much, swimming never gets old! I can’t wait for Zuri to try the Legend Villas swimming pool! The hotel swimming pool is right beside Lanai.

Obviously, I’m very much taken with The Legend Villas elegant old world charm. But the Legend Villas is more than just its facilities and amenities. More than its elegance, The Legend Villas prides itself in the kind of heartwarming, comfortable, homey service that The Legend Villas brand is known for.

Perhaps, this is the element I was talking about that could not be captured in photos. This is why Google did not give the hotel justice when I searched for it prior to the TravelBook blogger affiliate event. This is why when I met The Legend Villas in person, it immediately reminded me of Vigan. It reminded me of home. True, warm, Filipino service. Nothing beats that.

The Legend Villas is a Filipino Christian hotel owned and managed by Legend Hotels International Corporation. Their exemplary, truly Filipino brand of service extends to their other sister hotels: The Legend Palawan Puerto Princesa, The Mabuhay Manor Pasay, The Kabayan Hotel Pasay and the Pinoy Pamilya Hotel Pasay.
