Something’s cooking… πŸ™‚

pork-ribs-sinigang

I’m cooking Pork Ribs Sinigang tonight as per my husband’s and kid’s request. Hmm… yum.. πŸ™‚

Anyway, Zuri and I went to Savemore this afternoon to buy ingredients for my Pork Ribs Sinigang. Since it’s halloween, Savemore had a Trick or Treat promo for its customers. All kids up to 7 years old who would come to the store in costumes could get a chance to take home a handful of candies for every receipt worth at least PHP 100.

Zuri wore her old Japanese costume which she already used for halloween in 2013 and also for United Nations Day last year. This Japanese costume is sulit na sulit!

To maximize the promo, I divided our purchases into six and got six separate receipts worth at least PHP 100 each. Zuri was able to get a handful of candies from the treats container six times! Woot!

Yesterday was a milestone for me as a blogger. For twenty-two months, my introverted self was alone in “my blogging world”. Finally, I found the courage to go out there and meet like-minded people (who turned out to be really nice, by the way). Thank you TravelBook Philippines and The Legend Villas and to all other sponsors for my first ever official blogger event!

Since I’ll be out tomorrow to attend the TravelBook Philippines Blogger Affiliate Get-Together, I already prepared Rupert and Zuri’s meals in advance. I cooked Tocino and Lumpiang Shanghai.

The tocino was easy. I just fried the ready-made tocino that I bought from the grocery store. I also prepared sliced tomatoes and onions to go with the tocino.

tocino-and-kamatis

For the Lumpiang Shanghai, I had to improvise a bit. I used up all my carrots when I cooked Squid and Vegetables in Oyster Sauce yesterday. So instead of carrots, I used the last sayote that I had in the ref. For my Lumpiang Shanghai, I used the following ingredients: lean ground beef (previously cooked in oil), onions, onion leeks, sayote, salt and pepper.

My Lumpiang Shanghai actually turned out pretty well considering it was my first time to cook this dish all by myself. So crispy! πŸ™‚

Also, I still have some leftover Squid and Vegetables in Oyster Sauce that will go well with my Lumpiang Shanghai. Gotta make sure my loves won’t starve while I’m out!

Phew! Finally home again! We just got back yesterday from Zuri’s four-day hospital stay due to pneumonia. It started with what seemed like simple colds last Saturday (Oct. 22). By Sunday morning (Oct. 23), Zuri had cough, too.

We went for a check-up Sunday afternoon (still Oct. 23) at St. Luke’s BGC Urgent Care. With clear breath sounds, no fever and with a history of allergy, the impression then was that Zuri was just having some kind of allergy, perhaps due to dust. She was advised to continue taking Cetirizine syrup 5mg/5ml, 5 ml once a day and to come back to the Emergency Room if a fever develops.

By Sunday night (still Oct. 23), Zuri was already febrile (highest temperature of 38.3 degrees Celsius), so we immediately brought her to St. Luke’s QC. At the ER, she vomited four times. (The thing with Zuri is that she always vomits when she’s sick, no matter what illness she has.) She was then admitted to the hospital and intravenous hydration was started.

Zuri at St. Luke's QC Emergency Room

Zuri at St. Luke’s QC Emergency Room

By Monday morning (Oct. 24), Zuri’s pediatrician ordered that a chest x-ray be done (At that time, I noticed that Zuri was also breathing abnormally fast). Then, I was informed that the chest x-ray showed beginning pneumonia. This is despite the fact that several doctors checked her and all of them heard clear breath sounds just a few hours before the chest x-ray. Yes, it seemed that everything happened so fast. Zuri was then started on IV antibiotics. When Zuri’s pediatrician visited her that afternoon, she said she could hear some rhonchi (abnormal lung sound). Thankfully, by that time, Zuri had already stopped vomiting and was no longer febrile.

Four days later, we’re finally home. Zuri still has cough, which I was told is usually the last to go in respiratory illnesses. She is no longer vomiting, no longer febrile, breathes, eats and drinks normally and is quite active. She’s still on oral antibiotics to complete 10 days of antibiotic treatment.

Zuri finally discharged from St. Luke's QC

Zuri finally discharged from St. Luke’s QC

(On a side note, Zuri also complained of tummy ache. A scout film of the abdomen showed that she had fecal stasis (lots of poop in her large intestines). This is because Zuri does not poop everyday. I was advised to train her to poop daily. Now, I bring Zuri to the toilet to poop even when she says she feels no urge. She eventually poops after sitting on the toilet bowl for a while.)

What started as “simple colds” on Oct. 22 turned out to be pneumonia just two days later. The lesson here: There is no such thing as “simple colds”. Anything “simple” can easily turn serious especially in children. Always be vigilant.

Buti na lang, I’m an “OA” mommy. That’s why I sought consult right away kahit second day pa lang ng colds, first day ng cough and kahit walang fever. Hours later na lang pala ay magkakalagnat na si Zuri at magsusuka. A few hours more, diagnosed as pneumonia na. On hindsight, hindi naman pala ako “OA”, tama lang pala talaga yung ginawa ko.Β When it comes to health, it’s always better to be ahead.

To all parents out there, yes, pneumonia can happen that fast. Take care of your children. Okay lang maging makulit sa mga doktor at nurse kung kinakailangan. πŸ™‚

Well, that’s it. No libot for Zuri this weekend. Thanks for dropping by! Always a pleasure to share my experiences with my readers. Now, I gotta go give Zuri her next dose of antibiotics.

Oh, by the way, I said I made a promise to pay closer attention to what we eat (meaning to cook more) no matter how busy I get, so last night, I cooked this for Zuri kahit pagod at antok na ako. (Hirap matulog sa ospital!) I don’t really know what to call it but this dish has the following: onions, ginger, squid, squid balls, carrots, cabbage, soy sauce and oyster sauce. I served it with some egg noodles, pineapple and orange. πŸ™‚

I admit being a mom and a wife to a daughter and a husband who look to me for whatever big or small thing they need + single-handedly maintaining a blog is getting to be very tiring.

It does not help that I have a husband who packs our weekends full with activities, parties to attend, friends to see, games to play, etc. instead of just staying home to rest.

I can not even remember the last time I just stayed home the whole day with nothing to do. Or, it may be more accurate to say that “nothing to do” just never really happens to me.

Sometimes, we would deliberately plan in advance about not doing anything on a particular day, but something would always come up on the day itself. Β Even when we go on vacations, I still kind of work because I need to, you know, maintain this blog.

Sometimes, I think about just getting a maid or a yaya, but then again, I want to be, you know, hands-on. With all the things that I need to do, many times I just get so exhausted, so much so that I would rather buy some take-out food than prepare our meals from scratch. But I realize this is not consistent with me wanting to be hands-on, so now I’m making a promise to pay closer attention to what we eat.

Two nights ago, Zuri and I cooked chicken sopas + buttered shrimp + fish nuggets. Last night, I prepared Greek Salad to go with some pork barbeque that I bought from a neighbor. Today, with Zuri’s help, I cooked Creamy Cheesy Spaghetti + Pandesal Pizza.

Going on two consecutive halloween events for the last two days had me feeling sentimental. I realize my baby is growing way too fast. I dug through my files to look for all halloween photos that I still have of her. I chose my favorites and compiled them here.

I can’t believe my cute and chubby baby ladybug is now a tall and beautiful Tinker Bell. It is true that time flies. I wish I had the power to stop time so I could prolong each and every beautiful moment with her for as long as I could. But no person on earth has that kind of power. I’m thankful for the years I spent just by her side, watching her every move, shielding her from every possible danger I could think of, picking her up when she’s tired, breastfeeding her even when I had long run out of milk, staying up all night when she’s sick, celebrating all her triumphs – big and small, listening to her stories and marveling at how fast she learns, laughing with her all the time, taking her to places I knew she would enjoy, bringing her to school, fetching and asking her how her day went, watching and applauding her in all her performances. I can go on and on. I am blessed. I was given the one thing I wanted most in the world – to be a mother. And, alas, I couldn’t ask for a better daughter. πŸ™‚

Zuri’s No Tricks Just Treats Halloween event at school is happening today! And we are so excited! πŸ™‚

I mentioned before that Rupert and I made a promise of frugality for the months of October and November. That’s why, for the first time in years, Zuri is NOT buying any costume for the halloween season! Yup, we’re going DIY.

For the No Tricks Just Treats event at school, we’re reusing Zuri’s 4th birthday dress which I made myself with the help of Youtube. We’re restyling it to look like a witch costume with the help of some halloween accessories that we are getting from the pile that we have accumulated through the years. Check out Zuri’s halloween look below. πŸ™‚

diy-witch-halloween-costume-for-kids

I made this blue tutu dress after watching a tutorial video on Youtube. Zuri used this dress on her 4th birthday last year.

The broom and the witch hat with spider are some of the halloween accessories we have accumulated through the years. I think I bought them from Toy Kingdom years ago. The necklace and witch fingers were my in-laws’ old things which they left when they moved to Canada.

Those witch fingers are creepy but Zuri loves them. Hehe.

Also, last night, Zuri and I already prepared goodie bags for the Kinder class. Although the pre-packed halloween goodie bag by Trolli looks so cute, Zuri and I opted to go DIY. πŸ™‚

We got the following candies from a nearby grocery store:

Oct. 6, 2016

Finally, it’s the month of October! October is a pretty busy month for me because, aside from being my birth month, October is packed with school activities like United Nations Day and Trick or Treat.

Very soon, Zuri will be celebrating United Nations Day at school with her classmates, their teachers and some parents, too. The country assigned to their class is Greece. On United Nations Day, Zuri and her classmates will come to school wearing Greek costumes. They will also bring Greek food to be shared by everyone.

Since Rupert and I made a promise of frugality (more on this later) for the months of October and November (except on my birthday), spending too much on Zuri’s costume is out of the question. Thank goodness, there’s Youtube! I saw a video on how to make a Greek costume using only a white sheet of cloth, which may be a curtain or blanket or just about anything one already has at home. No cutting or sewing needed. For her accessories, Zuri will use her old gold belt and my long necklace as a headband. I will also let her borrow my earrings. For her shoes, Zuri will use her baby pink Gladiator sandals which we just recently bought fromΒ The SM Store at SM City Cabanatuan on my birthday. Gold sandals will look way better with her outfit, but she does not have gold sandals and we’re sticking to our low-cost policy. πŸ™‚

We did a dress rehearsal yesterday, just to make sure I will be able to pull off the whole no-sewing, curtain-turned-costume thing without a glitch. Check out her look below. πŸ™‚

greek-costume-for-girls

Materials: white curtain, Mommy Kay’s old necklace used as a headband, Mommy Kay’s old earrings, Zuri’s old gold belt, Zuri’s own gladiator sandals, Cost: PHP 0

Pretty neat for something that cost me nothing, huh? πŸ™‚ And I won’t have to cut the curtain or anything to make this costume, so I will still be able to use the curtain later on. Β πŸ™‚

Hair accessory: Mommy Kay’s old necklace

Belt: Zuri’s old gold belt

When we did the dress rehearsal yesterday, I did not have hairpins so I was not able to try to secure the necklace on Zuri’s thin hair. Zuri told me that they will perform a surprise dance number. I realize that it is important to make sure that her costume and all her accessories will be securely in place for the duration of the United Nations Day program, especially during their dance performance.

Today, I bought hairpins (PHP 10) from a street vendor to help me secure Zuri’s hair accessory. Just in case the hairpins can’t secure my necklace on Zuri’s thin hair, I will just let her use these cheap headbands that I bought from the same street vendor at PHP 20 each. πŸ™‚ We’ll play with these headbands and see which combination will best complete her look. Aside from safety pins, I will also use a black elastic hair tie with pearls and gold details (PHP 10) to help secure Zuri’s costume on the shoulder.

I originally wanted to spend nothing, as in PHP 0, on Zuri’s costume, but I think an additional PHP 80 for accessories isn’t bad. πŸ™‚

For the food, I will prepare tiny servings of Greek Salad. For the ingredients, I will use Emborg Feta in Oil with Herbs and Olives, tomato slices and cucumber bits. I will serve the salad in small plastic containers, the same size as the ones used as ketchup container in fast food restaurants.

I recently celebrated my birthday and I can’t wait to tell you all about it. But first, let me share my shoe shopping experience at SM Dept. Store SM Cabanatuan.

Cabanatuan City is my hometown. I celebrated my birthday with my family at a four-star hotel there. As a finale to my birthday celebration/a gift to myself, I went for a quick shoe shopping at SM Dept. Store SM Cabanatuan right before we left the city for Metro Manila.

The challenge: To spend no more than PHP 2,000 in one hour!

Check out my sulit finds! πŸ™‚

Zuri’s Sulit Find:

As always, Zuri comes first. I always shop for Zuri first before I shop for myself. (Yup, even on my birthday.) πŸ™‚

Well, this pair of gladiator sandals from Sugar Kids (Regular price: PHP 449.75) is the least sulit/most expensive out of all the shoes I bought, but Zuri chose this pair for herself, so…there.

Pink Gladiator Sandals for Zuri: Sugar Kids SM Dept. Store SM Cabanatuan Regular price: PHP 449.50

Anyway, these gladiator sandals are really cute and I love the color. Plus I like to encourage Zuri to make her own choices. So, I think this is still a good buy. πŸ™‚

Rupert’s Sulit Find:

Well, this really isn’t Rupert’s find because I was the one who found it. Rupert was somewhere else in the mall, doing something else while I was shoe shopping with Zuri and my siblings. I like it that way so Rupert wouldn’t bother me. He isn’t really into the whole shopping thing and always tells me to hurry up when he’s around while I shop, which kind of ruins the experience for me. So for everyone’s happiness, it is best to let Rupert do his thing (usually Pokemon Go) while Zuri and I do our thing (usually clothes, shoes, toy shopping). But, I digress.

Going back to what I was saying, I found this comfy pair of bedroom slippers for Rupert. He loves wearing hotel slippers because they’re so soft and comfy. Now, he has his own. I got this pair for PHP 109.75.

My sulit finds:

Once I was done picking stuff for Zuri and Rupert, I went to the women’s shoes section to shop for myself. I found these flat shoes from Solemate. They were on sale at PHP 499 for 2 pairs! How sulit is that !? These flats from Solemate are also available in other colors like baby pink, peach, royal blue, maroon, black. πŸ™‚

Promo Price: PHP 499 for 2!

I used to own more high heels than flats but ever since I became a Mommy, flat shoes became my ultimate best friend. Kung pwede nga lang mag flats kahit sa mga formal occasions!Β Now, I can never have too many flats. They’re just so useful to me. These flats in particular are for bringing and fetching Zuri to and from school.

My sister paid for these 2 pairs as a birthday gift to me. Thanks, Sister! πŸ™‚

Then, I found two other pairs of flats (again!) from Parisian. I’ve known about Parisian ever since my college days in UP Diliman. I used to buy my Parisian pairs from SM Dept. Store, SM North Edsa. Parisian has stylish, reasonably priced shoes – pairs that students can afford. I still remember the first pair of silver flats that I bought when I was in college. I think that was also my first Parisian pair.

These silver and army green Parisian flats are way simpler than the quirky ones I used to have. But, I think, this simple, classic design is more suitable for my age and taste now. πŸ™‚

After the flats, I also got myself a cute and comfy pair of bedroom slippers for PHP 99.75. Yey! I’m all about comfort now. πŸ™‚

Upon coming back from our Cabanatuan trip last weekend, we visited Quezon Memorial Circle for some quick shopping at the weekend tiangge (flea market) and a little Pokemon time for Rupert.

Here are my finds:

I was surprised to find some dresses with really good fabric and cute designs.Β This Hello Kitty tutu dress has a soft breathable cotton top. Zuri wore this dress to school yesterday.

I also bought this cute Sofia The First tutu dress which is made of the same soft and breathable material as the Hello Kitty dress. Zuri’s wearing this dress to school today. πŸ™‚

Sofia The First tutu dress from Quezon Memorial Circle weekend tiangge (flea market). PHP 180.

The Quezon Memorial Circle weekend tiangge (flea market) is a good option for shopping especially for budget-conscious moms. Β Just remember to:

1. Choose carefully.

Hidden among the substandard merchandise are some quality finds.

2. Haggle.Β

The vendor originally asked for PHP 250 for one character dress. I eventually got the dresses for PHP 180 each. (My mother, who has mastered the art of bargaining, probably could have gotten the dresses for PHP 150 each or even lower.)

3. Watch your valuables (especially your children!).

Position your bag in front of you and hug it if you can. ALWAYS be physically in contact with your child. ALWAYS hold your child’s hand or carry your child. NEVER lose sight of your little one.

Second, I finally had my impacted wisdom tooth taken out last Saturday. I can’t thank Dr. Barrera of Samaniego and Associates enough for a comfortable wisdom tooth extraction. In my mind, I was prepared for a long oral surgery, but it only took the good dentist 30 minutes to finish! I didn’t feel any discomfort at all. Even Zuri loves her dental check ups with Dr. Barrera. πŸ™‚

In case you are in need of a reliable dentist, you may call Samaniego and Associates atΒ +63(2)8151332 to set an appointment.

Third, after my dental appointment, I went to my hometown Cabanatuan City to spend the rest of the weekend there. I had the best Kare-Kare by Paolo’s Resto Bar! Β About three weeks ago I also ordered Kare-Kare from Manila Marriott Hotel’s room service and I loved it, but there is something very comforting about Paolo’s homemade version of Kare-Kare!

We took Zuri and her cousins to Quezon Memorial Circle yesterday for some kiddie fun time. Although Circle of Joy was a big disappointment, the kids had a great time at Pedal N Paddle!

Zuri and her cousin Gwen tried the binky ride at the Kids Station (go kart) with their respective dads following closely behind. :) The inner lane in this photo is for big riders while the outer lane is for small riders.

Afternoon update: About Toys

I love toys. I love love love toys. Having said that, I notice that toys are getting bad press nowadays. Β Toys are labelled as excessive and pointless and bad for kids, for fear that today’s kids might grow up as spoiled, entitled, unimaginative individuals.

Really?

Zuri is a HUGE fan of maxi dresses. She calls them the “princess dress”. Β I love maxi dresses, too. They’re stylish and comfortable and they protect Zuri’s legs from mosquito bites. My only reservation about these uber long dresses is that if Zuri’s not careful, she might trip especially while playing.

I noticed that the playground at Zuri’s school is under repair this week so no climbing up and down at the end of class for the kiddos. Which means… now is the perfect time for that maxi dress to make an appearance. Check out Zuri’s school OOTD below featuring the maxi dress. πŸ™‚

Phew! It’s been a busy couple of days!

First of all, let me say that I’m deeply saddened by the explosion that happened in Davao. Β I hope and pray this kind of horrible act never happens again. πŸ™

Second, Rupert, Zuri and I went on an awesome adventure somewhere really awesome and a new series about that is coming up on this site this month! πŸ™‚

Third, because our fun but exhausting adventure trip left us with almost no energy at all, we decided to use Rupert’s Rewards Points to go on an overnight staycation in Marriott Hotel Manila the day after our flight back to Manila. I’ll be writing about our Marriott staycation, too, so watch out for that! πŸ™‚

Fourth, the past week had been a great reminder to me about how important it is to take care of our teeth. I had a terrible toothache that just wouldn’t go away even with different kinds of painkillers. I was seen by 3 different dentists and, at one point, I even went to St. Luke’s QC Emergency at 5:00 in the morning to seek advice and make sure that my dental situation was not turning into a medical situation. Finally, I was able to get an appointment with our family dentist, Dr. Barrera of Samaniego and Associates. Β What a lovely dentist! Everything went uphill from there. Zuri also had a check up and her first dental filling and was not terrorized at all. She even received a prize from the good dentist after her check up. πŸ™‚

If you’re looking for a dentist for yourself or your child, I recommend Dr. Barrera. Call this number to set an appointment:Β +63(2)8151332.

Fifth, we went to Greenbelt 5 after our dental check up and had a lovely lunch at Peking Garden. If you’re craving for good Chinese food, Peking Garden won’t let you down. We spent PHP 1,300 for 2 adults and 1 child.
After lunch, Zuri and I went shopping at Mothercare. We found a pretty dress that fits perfectly on Zuri’s slim frame. Β She wore it to school today! Check it out below. πŸ™‚

Afternoon update: I just recently published a new article in my Jakarta Series about Fatahillah SquareΒ – former seat of power of the Dutch in Indonesia during colonial times. Check it out here. πŸ™‚

Morning update: Hi! We are back from an awesome time with our P&G friends at Kabayan Beach Resort last weekend. A little vitamin sea is always good for the body, mind and soul. πŸ™‚ Watch out for my post about this trip! πŸ™‚

No school again today because it’s Quezon City Day. Perfect time to declare a chore day for Zuri and me! πŸ™‚

Do you think parents should let their kids participate in doing household chores? Here’s my take.

I believe it is important to let kids do chores. It teaches them the value of responsibility.Β Although we have a spare room, Zuri still sleeps in the same bedroom as Rupert and me. Because we share the same room, I tell Zuri that keeping the bedroom tidy is as much her responsibility as it is mine. It is her responsibility to pack away all toys and art materials that she uses through out the day.

Doing chores teaches children to appreciate the value of hard work. When it’s time for cleaning, I let Zuri use her toy broom to sweep our bedroom floor.Β One time, after sweeping our bedroom floor, Zuri told me she was really tired. She said she can’t even imagine how tired I get when I clean the whole house.Β Doing chores gives children a better appreciation of what their elders do to take care of them.

chores for kids, child doing chores, should parents let their kids do chores?

Here’s Zuri sweeping our bedroom floor with her toy broom. πŸ™‚

I also let Zuri help me with the laundry. Zuri helps me sort our dirty clothes before loading them in the washer. I allow her to press the power and start buttons on the washing machine. Zuri tells me this makes her happy because she likes helping me. When children see what they can accomplish and how much they can be of help to Mommy and Daddy, they develop self-confidence. It gives them a sense of pride and fulfillment to be able to help a grown-up do a “grown-up” job.

When it’s time to cook, Zuri likes to help me with my Sinigang. She is in charge of separating the kangkong leaves from the stalk. She also helps me cook rice. She likes to count the cups of water she pours into the rice pot. When food is ready, Zuri enjoys setting the table with me. She is in charge of the spoons and forks. Unlike packing her toys, helping out in the kitchen is not one of Zuri’s responsibilities. I don’t require her to help me with the cooking or table setting. She volunteers to help because she thinks these activities are fun.

As a parent, I know how it feels to want to keep my baby a baby forever. I know how it feels to want to give everything to my child, to want to show her how much I love her every chance I get. One language of love is service, so it is only natural that parents want to serve their children as a sign of their never-ending love. It is very tempting to do everything for our children.

However, we are not only their caretakers, we are also their teachers. It is our job to prepare them for life. They are not going to be babies forever. To be truly prepared for life, there are things that they will have to learn to do for themselves. And their training starts at home.

Two things.

First, Zuri’s dress rehearsal for their Buwan ng Lahi Program is today! Here’s her costume/OOTD. πŸ™‚

bird costume, preschool bird costume

I made her wings and headdress using black, violet, blue, green, yellow, orange and pink cartolina and popsicle sticks, fuzzy wire, velcro, hot glue and double-sided tape. She’s also wearing black leotards from Yvonne SM Dept. Store North Edsa, black leather skirt from Mango Kids, black leggings from H&M and neon slippers from Ipanema. πŸ™‚

Zuri’s class danced to the tune of Tatlong Bibe and Rock Baby Rock. πŸ™‚

Second, the books I bought yesterday from the Adarna Book Fair were such a hit, I thought it best to not pass up the chance to buy more! πŸ™‚

I’m so thankful that the Adarna salesperson gave me a free Batang Adarna Product Catalogue. This helped me choose what books to get for Zuri based on the book’s teaching content, age recommendation and awards received.

The Adarna Product Catalogue contains details about their books such as age recommendation, teaching content, awards received, names of authors and illustrators.

Β  Like yesterday, Zuri and I got a total of 9 new books today. Yey! πŸ™‚

Ang Mahiyaing Manok is an Palanca award-winning book that teaches courage and self-confidence. SiΒ PutotΒ is a book about self-worth.Β Ang Kamatis ni Peles is another award-winning book that teaches the value of perseverance. Ang Mahiyaing Manok and Ang Kamatis ni Peles are my top choices because I want Zuri to learn self-confidence and perseverance. Si Putot is actually Zuri’s choice because she’s curious about the dog Putot. πŸ™‚

Naaay!Taaay!Β is another one of my picks. It’s a book that demonstrates parents’ love in spite of children’s never-ending pleas – a very familiar scenario at home. πŸ™‚

Science-themed books for young children have a special place in my heart. Β I feel that there should be more effort in general to bring Science closer to our littlest learners.Β Diego and MarieΒ is a science adventure book that teaches about the five senses.

Speaking of Science, I also found these interesting Science books at the Adarna Book Fair. I think I was thinking more of my own geekiness than Zuri when I bought these. πŸ™‚ I think Zuri can handleΒ Can We Drink The Ocean?Β if I make it simple enough butΒ Can We Plug into Lightning?Β is way too advanced for 5-year-old Zuri at this point. πŸ™‚

August 17, 2016

Adarna Book Fair is visiting Zuri’s school for 2 days just in time for Buwan ng Lahing Pilipino. πŸ™‚ While Zuri was at rehearsals today for their Buwan ng Lahi Program, I was able to shop at the Adarna Book Fair. I bought some really nice books (at 10% off!) that Zuri enjoyed reading as soon as we got home. Check them out! πŸ™‚

Dumaan si Butiki is an award winning book that teaches simple Filipino words/sentences using clear illustrations. I read this book to Zuri, then she translated the Filipino sentences to English, so I was sure she understood the Filipino words. Rupert and I are all for English-speaking children and Zuri is one. But we have always made it a point also to bring up Zuri to be, at the very least, bilingual – proficient in both English and Filipino.

My Ate and I/ My Kuya and I is actually a back-to-back book with two titles. This book is a step higher compared to Over and Under in terms of reading difficulty because it uses not just words but complete sentences. For children who can already read simple words, this book that features simple sentences is the next step.

Sanayang Adarna 1, Sanayang Adarna 2 and Weewoo are all activity books with instructions written in Filipino. I highly recommend these books.

Si Pagong at si Matsing 10% Discounted Price: PHP 70 Si Langgam at si Tipaklong 10% Discounted Price: PHP 70

I was so happy to see Si Langgam at si Tipaklong and Si Pagong at si Matsing! I read these storybooks as a child. I remember buying these titles at PHP 10 each when I was in Grade 1. Now, I got Zuri’s copies at PHP 70 each. Adarna offers so many storybook titles, it was so confusing to choose which ones to buy. I picked these two because I already know how the stories go. Haha. πŸ™‚

Si Pagong at si Matsing is written in both English and Filipino, a good aid in teaching bilingual readers. Si Langgam at si Tipaklong is written in Filipino. These stories also teach moral lessons that will stay with their young readers for life. πŸ™‚

Market Day is a very interesting book that talks about what it would be like to go to the market in various Southeast Asian countries. This book will be more timely in October which is United Nations Month but I can’t pass up a good book when I see one. πŸ™‚

I saw Figure This Out 2 at the Adarna Book Fair but I did not buy anymore because Zuri already has these two books above which I bought from Powerbooks last year. Figure This Out and Figure This Out 2 are books that challenge a child’s logical thinking. I also highly recommend these books. πŸ™‚

Second: No classes again today in QC so Zuri got to go with me to the grocery store in her PJs. πŸ™‚ We usually go to Savemore for our needs because it’s nearer, but today we went to Puregold. What a treat! I found some of my childhood favorites I haven’t seen for a long time. πŸ™‚
